WORK IN PROGRESS

Untitled, Oil on Canvas, 72 x 48 inches
I was inspired by Mantegna’s Death of Christ to create this painting. I was interested in experimenting with foreshortening and the use of multiple perspectives in one painting, like Cezanne did in his still lives. I also wanted to create a personal portrait on how I’ve been affected by Catholocism and those with Catholic beliefs into feeling shameful about my body and what I do with it. The plant represents growth from overcoming the anxiety that I lived in while I was religious. I put my body in a sexual pose, though I did not include a person with me because this is about self-liberation.
