Construction and Decay, 2022
Dried SCOBY, motor, microcontroller, coded machine embroidery, 17 x 6 inch wooden frame
My mom inspired this piece, as her Catholocism has led me to have trauma with anti-gay propaganda and religious shame and guilt surrounding body image and sexual conduct. I was initially inspired to use SCOBY as a medium, after watching her grow kombucha in our kitchen for years and have always been amazed by its organic texture, transparency, and textile possibilities. I feel that the coded aspects of this project symbolize the pre-determinedness of people’s lives when they are indoctrinated into the Catholic Church. On it, there are machine embroidered Pagan Polish symbols that are a recurring motif in my work. The symbols act like stamps, marking the body, which is represented by the SCOBY, as a form of control and power. I tried to make it look as if the SCOBY was breathing and the brittle, flaking SCOBY represents the persistence of the Catholic church over time.
